Astrophotography Basics (Including Transport)
Get to know the basics. Pick up the basics of astrophotography quickly and easily at your own pace.
This course is aimed at those that are already comfortable with using their camera in full manual mode and can comfortably set these settings as required.
If you can't do this we're happy to help but your camera must have a full manual mode to make the most of capturing images at night.
Prerequisites:
- A good sturdy tripod
- A fully manual DSLR / mirrorless camera
- A fast lens (f2.8 or lower)
- Any lens with a short focal length (24mm or lower)
If your camera is not suitable we may have one you can use but you will need to have an SD card (V10 or faster).
This type of photography can also be done with a kit lens but is a bit more challenging and may not produce the required results.
What will be covered:
- Tripod & camera setup
- Camera settings
- Focusing
- Taking shots while allowing for earth's rotation
- Taking multiple sequential shots to use in post production
We will arrive at the site around dusk/sunset to familiarise ourselves with equipment/setup and then as night falls orientate ourselves to the night sky and select objects/constellations to photograph.
Duration: 4 hours (on site: 1-2 hours)
Wrap warmly as it can get very cold standing around taking photographs.

Although these excursions are available 7 days a week if numbers are low (less than 4 people for example) or the weather is not conducive we may move the trip t another day.
Please try to book at least 1-2 days BEFORE you have to travel back so we can accommodate if the weather is not perfect for the astrophotography.
